1. State the Code

Section 205 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) deals with the offense of false personation in legal proceedings. Here is a further explanation on IPC Section 205.

2. Explanation

It states that whoever, with intent to deceive, or to induce any person to believe that he is some other person,
personates any other person, in any stage of any judicial proceeding,
shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both.

Imagine a situation where a person pretends to be someone else during a court hearing. This person might be attempting to:

  • Claim benefits that rightfully belong to the person they are impersonating.
  • Escape responsibility for a crime.
  • Influence the court’s decision in a particular case.
