In India, Muslim personal law governs divorce. The primary grounds for a divorce under Islamic law are ‘talaq’ (divorce initiated by the husband), ‘khula’ (divorce initiated by the wife) and ‘khul’ (divorce by mutual consent). Each of these requires specific legal procedures and pronouncements to be valid.
