My wife and I were married in a traditional Muslim ceremony. While I’m fully committed to our marriage, she and her family are planning to file a 498A case and other legal actions against me, accusing me of violence. I’ve heard that since the Uniform Civil Code isn’t in place, these laws might not apply to Muslims because we follow Muslim Personal Law. Is this true? Can they really file these cases against me, considering our religious background?

The Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Section 498A, applies to all citizens, regardless of their religion. While Muslim Personal Law governs matters like marriage, divorce, and inheritance, it doesn’t exempt individuals from the criminal laws of the country. Therefore, your wife and her family can still file these cases against you, even if you were married in a Muslim ceremony.
