My husband and I got married in a Nikah ceremony on March 1st, 2015. Since then, I’ve faced constant harassment from my in-laws. Now they’re making threats to harm me and even falsely accuse me to get me arrested. Is there a safe way for me to get a divorce without facing any legal repercussions from their false claims? I want to avoid any unnecessary financial burden beyond basic maintenance. What should I do in this situation?

You can file for divorce under the Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Application Act, 1937, citing cruelty and harassment as grounds. You can also seek protection from your in-laws by filing a complaint under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code for domestic violence. A court can grant you maintenance and also issue protective orders against your in-laws.
