My father bought a plot of land, about 4000 square feet, in 1978 and built a small house on it. He passed away in April 2006, leaving behind my mother, myself, a son, and two daughters. One daughter got married in 1981 and separated in 1983. She lived with us until 2014, but then decided to live with my other sister who was married in 1983. My mother passed away in December 2015.
As a Muslim, I’d like to understand how the property should be divided according to Islamic law. What are my rights, and what are the rights of my sons? I have one daughter and two sons. Can you please explain the process of dividing the property fairly?

Under Islamic law, the property would be divided according to Sharia inheritance laws. As the son, you’d receive a larger share than your sisters, and your sons would inherit from you. The daughter who lived with you until 2014 would likely receive an equal share as your other sisters, despite her separation in 1983. The specifics of the division depend on the exact circumstances and would be best discussed with an Islamic legal scholar.
