I’m a Shia and eloped with a Shia girl. We returned after our families promised to get us married. Now they refuse, saying a marriage without parental consent is illegal and they won’t recognize it. I have a Nikahnama. Can I file an FIR?

In India, a Nikahnama is a valid document for a Muslim marriage. However, refusing to recognize a marriage without parental consent is not a legal ground. Filing an FIR against your families for refusing to recognize your marriage might be difficult as it’s not a criminal offense. You can approach a family court to seek legal recourse for registering your marriage and resolving any issues.
