We’ve been renting a house and paid a 1 lakh deposit to the landlord. Now, he’s asking us to leave, claiming we waste water. Our lease expired, and we weren’t planning to renew as we were moving. The landlord says we owe rent for another month because he hasn’t found a new tenant. But our agreement states a two-month notice period, not two months’ rent. Can he demand rent? Also, our lease expired – is it still valid?

Your lease has expired, so it is no longer valid. While a two-month notice period is standard, the landlord cannot demand rent for another month just because he hasn’t found a new tenant. You are only obligated to pay rent up to the lease’s expiry date. The landlord is not entitled to rent after that unless your agreement specifically states otherwise.
