My tenant and I had a verbal agreement for a house I rented out in December 2015. Now, they’re asking for a formal agreement on stamp paper. I’d like to draft a new agreement on an e-stamp paper, dated today, but with the original start date of December 2015. Is this legally sound in India?

Under Indian law, you can’t backdate a formal agreement to reflect a prior verbal agreement. A new agreement dated today would be legally sound, but it would reflect the current terms and conditions, not the original agreement. It’s advisable to consult a lawyer to ensure your legal rights are protected.
