My landlord asked me to leave the house by March 31st, 2017, and we agreed verbally in November 2016. The old agreement ended on December 31st, 2016. Now, I’ve told him I’ll leave by January 31st, and he’s okay with that. However, when I asked about my deposit, he said he’d pay on the day I leave. In the past, he’s deducted money from tenants’ deposits without any explanation, and he only accepts cash for rent. Since he might give me less than what I’m owed, what should I do? He’s an ex-serviceman, and I want to ensure I receive my full deposit according to the agreement that expired on December 31st, 2016.

You should request a written acknowledgment from your landlord stating the amount of your deposit and the date it will be returned. This will provide you with a record and protection against deductions without justification. You can also consider consulting a lawyer to understand your rights under the law and negotiate a clear agreement regarding the deposit return.
