My landlord and I signed a rent agreement on a ₹100 stamp paper, which was notarized and filed with the police station and our society. The agreement clearly states a 24-month lease period from December 2014 to December 2016, and I’ve already given him 24 rent cheques. It also has a lock-in period of 24 months, with early termination allowed only by mutual consent within those first two years. He’s now asking me to vacate by May 1st due to a family issue. I’ve explained my reasons for needing to stay until December 2016, but he’s insistent. What should I do?

Based on your rent agreement, your landlord cannot legally force you to vacate before the lease period ends in December 2016. The agreement clearly states a 24-month lock-in period and early termination requires mutual consent. You have a valid legal basis to resist his request and can seek legal counsel if needed.
