I’ve lived in a rented house for over 5 years and paid a security deposit of Rs. 90,000. I moved out in March 2016, but the owner is demanding Rs. 30,000 for painting, carpentry, and plumbing work, even though the house was well-maintained with only minor wear and tear. He reluctantly agreed to reduce the amount to Rs. 25,000, but I refused. He then became very aggressive and disrespectful. What should I do?

Under Indian law, the landlord can only deduct from your security deposit for damages beyond normal wear and tear. Since you maintained the house well, you can refuse to pay. You can also seek legal advice and file a complaint with the consumer forum or rent control board if the landlord’s behavior continues.
