Our small business hired someone based on a referral, without signing a contract. She left abruptly after a month without any notice. We couldn’t reach her by phone or WhatsApp, and she blocked us. She also took our office phone, which we use for client calls. She returned it after a few days, but it was damaged. Now she’s demanding money and making threats through someone else, using harsh language. We already paid her some money upfront. What legal options do we have in India?

You can pursue legal action for breach of contract, even though no formal contract was signed. You can also file a police complaint for theft and harassment based on the phone damage and threats. You can approach the labor court for recovery of the upfront payment made, as she did not complete the agreed upon service.
