My father, a lecturer at a government college, passed away at 58, just before retirement. I was finishing my B.Com. at the time. My elder brother applied for his father’s job as an assistant teacher on compassionate grounds. Despite promising in writing to care for the family, he’s neglecting me. The college authorities say they can’t intervene after the appointment. What legal options do I have?

Indian law allows for legal heirs to claim a share in the deceased’s estate, including any property or benefits. You can approach the court to establish your legal rights and claim your share of the deceased’s benefits. However, the college authorities are unlikely to intervene in the appointment process as it is a separate legal entity.
