I’ve been teaching at a school since 2009, initially on a 3-year contract. After that, I was given two more extensions, each for 2 years. My contract was supposed to be renewed on April 1st, but it wasn’t. I’m eight months pregnant, and I’m worried because the school considers the first year of every renewal as a probationary period. I’ve always had good performance reviews and never received any warnings. Is it legal for them to terminate my contract just because I’m expecting a baby?

Under Indian law, terminating a pregnant employee’s contract without just cause is illegal. The Maternity Benefit Act, 1961, provides protection against discrimination based on pregnancy. Since you have a good performance record and haven’t received any warnings, the school’s action likely violates the law.
