I’m a web designer working for a company in India. I signed a two-year contract and had to submit my original certificates for verification when I joined. Now, I need my certificates to apply for a passport. They initially asked for a blank cheque, then a signed blank document. After agreeing, they changed their mind and demanded ₹1 lakh! I offered to return the certificates after passport verification, but they’re refusing. The contract doesn’t mention anything about holding my certificates.

Your employer’s actions are illegal. Holding your original certificates as a condition of employment is not permissible under Indian law. You have the right to your certificates and can file a complaint with the Labour Department to retrieve them. You should also seek legal advice to understand your rights and options for recovering your certificates.
