I’m a Group B government employee working at a technical institute in Haryana. I took two days of winter vacation leave, mentioning lower back pain as the reason. Now, my institute head is asking for a medical certificate and a medical fitness certificate upon my return.
Is it legally required to provide these certificates for taking winter vacation leave? Or are they only needed for medical leave? Do I need to provide certificates even for short casual leaves (like one or two days) taken due to simple body pain or fever? Please advise.

Indian law does not generally require medical certificates for casual leave, including winter vacation leave, unless it exceeds a specific duration or is taken for a medical condition. However, your institute may have its own internal rules regarding leave policies and documentation, so it’s best to check your institute’s leave policy and clarify the requirements with your superiors.
