I joined a company in September 2015 and resigned in January 2016, completing my notice period. My final payment was around ₹40,000, but they deducted ₹30,000 for income tax. They were supposed to pay the remaining amount, but now they’re asking me to repay the relocation allowance they provided during my employment. I was never informed about this repayment requirement, neither verbally nor in writing. Now they’ve relieved me of my duties. What should I do? Can I file a complaint with the Labour Department?

You can file a complaint with the Labour Department as the company’s actions seem unfair and potentially illegal. They can’t deduct income tax from your final payment without proper documentation and cannot retrospectively impose a repayment obligation for the relocation allowance if it wasn’t clearly stipulated in your employment contract.
