My wife, who was widowed before we married, has a daughter from her previous marriage. Her daughter’s birth certificate lists her biological father’s name. However, at school, her name and my name are recorded as father. This discrepancy is causing problems, especially as she moves to higher grades and will need to apply for documents like a passport or PAN card. I’d like to formally adopt her and complete the legal process. I’d appreciate any advice on how to proceed.

In India, you can legally adopt your stepdaughter. You’ll need to file an adoption petition in the appropriate court, demonstrating your intent to adopt and the child’s best interests. You’ll need to provide proof of your marriage, your wife’s previous widowhood, and her daughter’s consent (if she’s old enough). A social worker’s report may be required as part of the process.
