My sister married a divorced man in February 2016, in a Gurudwara in Delhi. He has a 6-year-old daughter who lives with him. Soon after the wedding, his mother and sisters started pressuring my sister, causing problems at home. They even asked my parents to take her back. My family tried to mediate, and things are somewhat better now. The problem is that my sister and parents have asked her husband to register the marriage legally, but he’s hesitant. What should we do in this situation?

In India, a marriage solemnized under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, is legally valid and enforceable. Your sister can approach the concerned authority to register their marriage, even if her husband is hesitant. If he continues to refuse, she can file a petition in court to compel him to register their marriage.
