My mother-in-law believes that since I’m married, my parents have no claim on me. She insists I need her permission to visit them and wants to control how long I stay. My husband doesn’t mind me spending time with my family, but she’s been disrespectful and hurtful to my parents. As a Hindu, should I put up with this behaviour?

Indian law recognizes that adult individuals, regardless of their marital status, have the right to maintain relationships with their families. Your mother-in-law’s actions are disrespectful and violate your personal autonomy. While respecting your husband’s family is important, you have the right to visit your parents without undue interference.
