My fiancé is a Christian from Kerala, and I’m a Hindu from Chennai. We’re both in our mid-twenties and want to get married, but my parents are strongly opposed. They’ve already raised concerns about our interfaith relationship. Could they still file a legal case against him to take me back, even after the legal waiting period for objections has passed? My fiancé also has a past criminal case that’s being resolved, but it’s not yet completely cleared. Could this past case be used against us? I’m worried about any potential legal obstacles my dad’s lawyer might use. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

In India, parents cannot legally force an adult to marry someone else or prevent them from marrying someone of their choice. Your father’s lawyer cannot use your fiancé’s past criminal case to stop your marriage, especially after the legal waiting period for objections has passed. However, your father might try to influence you emotionally or use social pressure, but it’s not legally actionable.
