My father inherited his mother’s ancestral property, but we, his three daughters, haven’t lived with him for four years. My two younger sisters are minors, and I’m an adult. My mother has filed a case claiming ownership of the property. Can we claim a share in it? He inherited the property from his mother, not through a gift, and registered it in his name after her death. Is there any way we can get a portion of the property?

Yes, you and your sisters can claim a share in the property. Under the Hindu Succession Act of 1956, daughters have equal rights to inherit ancestral property, even if they haven’t lived with their father. Your mother’s claim will need to be assessed by the court based on the specific facts of the case.
