My family in Delhi consists of my mother, father, elder sister, and myself. We live in a house jointly owned by my parents. My father takes out loans, which my mother and now my unmarried sister (33) are repaying. My father’s behaviour is causing us immense distress, and he threatens suicide if we don’t give him money or sell the property. We’re worried he might destroy any funds we receive from a sale. Could you advise on how we can separate from my father and claim our rightful share of the property?

In India, you can file a partition suit to separate your share of the property from your father’s. You can also seek a restraining order against him to prevent any harm to yourselves or the property.
