My family and I are from a Scheduled Caste background and follow Hinduism. I married a Christian girl in a court marriage after facing initial difficulties. We registered our marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act. However, the local registrar is refusing to issue our marriage certificate, citing inter-caste issues. The village council is also creating problems, claiming I’m no longer SC because I married a Christian and threatening to revoke my caste certificate. They seem to be more powerful than the registrar and are making this process extremely difficult.

The registrar’s refusal to issue your marriage certificate is illegal and discriminatory, as inter-caste marriages are legally recognized in India. The village council’s actions are also illegal and based on prejudice, as your caste cannot be revoked based on your marital choice. You should immediately consult a lawyer and file a complaint with the National Commission for Scheduled Castes against both the registrar and the village council.
