I’m a 35-year-old woman, married to a good man whom my parents didn’t approve of. Before marriage, I worked and my mother managed my finances, refusing to give me access to my bank account. The first time I visited after marriage, there was a huge fight. My mother said this wasn’t my home anymore and wouldn’t even let me near the computer. Three years later, after having my second child, I stayed for two weeks. My mother and sister constantly harassed me, accusing my husband of not giving me money. I was devastated. I worked my whole life and gave them my earnings. When I asked for my bank passbook, they claimed it was stolen. What can I do now?

Under Indian law, you have a right to access your own bank account and financial records. Your mother’s refusal to provide you with access to your finances and her accusations against your husband could be considered harassment. You should consult with a lawyer to explore legal options for regaining access to your funds and holding your mother accountable for her actions.
