After three years of marriage, my in-laws are asking me to move out and pay rent, even though my husband promised they’d let me stay. He now denies everything he said, and doesn’t even pay for our expenses or visit me. I quit my job after marriage to be a homemaker, and have supported myself with my savings. Now I’ve found a job, but it pays little, and they’re trying to exploit the situation, even pressuring my husband to abandon me. He refuses to contribute to our daughter’s school fees or even give me money for daily needs. Can they legally force me out of their home, and is there any way to protect myself?

Indian law does not allow your in-laws to legally force you out of their home, especially without your husband’s consent and without proper notice. You have legal rights as a wife and mother, including rights to maintenance from your husband and a share in marital property. You should consult a lawyer to understand your specific rights and explore options like filing for maintenance and seeking a legal separation or divorce, if necessary.
