What documents are needed and which offices should I visit to handle the legal matters after my father, a retired government official, passed away? He lived in Kerala with his mother, while his wife and married daughter reside in Mumbai. He had bank fixed deposits without nominees, a partially built flat jointly owned with his wife in Mumbai, and a plot of land solely in his name in Kerala. We already have the death certificate.

You’ll need the death certificate, father’s will (if any), and property documents. Visit a lawyer in Kerala for the land and a lawyer in Mumbai for the flat and bank accounts. They can guide you through the succession process, including obtaining probate or letters of administration, to legally transfer assets to the rightful heirs.
