Namaste,
I got married in 2015 at my village, with a Qazi performing the ceremony and giving us a marriage certificate in Urdu. Now, I’m working in Pune and my HR department is asking for a marriage certificate from a local registrar. They say my Urdu certificate is not valid. Is this true?

Under Indian law, your marriage performed by a Qazi and documented with a certificate is valid. However, the certificate might not be acceptable for official purposes in Pune, as it is not issued by a local registrar. You can approach a local registrar in Pune to register your marriage and obtain a legally valid certificate for official purposes.
