My husband and I got married in a temple ceremony a few years ago, and we have the temple certificate and our wedding card. He’s going to Canada for work, and we need a marriage certificate for immigration purposes. Will the temple certificate be accepted? If not, what’s the process for registering our marriage in court? What documents do we need? Thank you so much for your help!

In India, a temple ceremony alone is not legally recognized as a marriage. You’ll need to register your marriage under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. To do so, you’ll need to file an application with the Marriage Registrar along with identity proofs, the temple certificate, wedding card, and witness statements.
