My girlfriend and I are from different religions, and we’re planning to get married. We’re a bit confused about the process, and have a few questions:
1. Do we have to convert to the same religion to get married?
2. Do we need a lawyer present when we register our marriage?
3. What documents and stamp paper are required for the marriage registration?
4. If our families aren’t supportive and we get married, will we face any safety issues, like needing police protection?

No, conversion is not mandatory for marriage in India. A lawyer is not required for marriage registration, but it’s advisable for guidance. For registration, you’ll need ID proofs, marriage certificate, and witness signatures. While family disapproval can be challenging, police protection is not automatically provided for interfaith couples.
