Hello everyone, I’m from Hyderabad. My wife and I got married a year ago without our families knowing. We want to get a marriage certificate now. We’re not related in any way, but we have the same last name. Will this be a problem when applying for a certificate under the Hindu Marriage Act? Or will they reject it just because of the shared surname? Applying under the Special Marriage Act might alert our families, and we want to tell them after we have the certificate because they wouldn’t approve of our marriage and might even try to take my wife away.

Your shared last name shouldn’t be a problem when applying for a marriage certificate under the Hindu Marriage Act. The law focuses on other factors like consent, age, and relationship status, not just surname. However, if you’re concerned about your families’ disapproval, you may consider discussing your situation with a legal professional for guidance.
