We got married in November 2012. Our daughter is 2 years old. My wife has been staying at her parents’ house since December 2014. She has attempted suicide three times (once before marriage and twice after) and frequently threatens to do so. She’s also become verbally abusive and I’ve found inappropriate messages and conversations with her brothers. Her parents constantly threaten legal action if we don’t take her back, but they won’t agree to a divorce or help her change her behavior. They are insistent on sending her back to our home.

Based on Indian law, you can file for divorce on grounds of cruelty, which includes physical and mental abuse. Your wife’s attempts at suicide and verbal abuse, along with her parents’ interference and refusal to help, constitute grounds for divorce. You can also seek legal protection against her threats and the threats made by her parents.
