My wife left for another country after we mutually agreed to divorce. Our agreement was for a settlement of ₹6 lakhs, of which I’ve already paid ₹3 lakhs. Now, she’s unavailable and has given her father power of attorney. We’re ready to pay the remaining ₹3 lakhs, but they’re refusing to send the power of attorney papers until we pay the full amount. I’m worried they might take the money and still not complete the divorce process. The judge suggested we try to reach an agreement outside the courtroom, but I’m unsure what to do. Any advice on how I should proceed?

You should consult a lawyer to draft a legally binding agreement outlining the payment of the remaining ₹3 lakhs and the transfer of the power of attorney. This agreement should clearly stipulate that the divorce process will be completed upon payment and should be signed by your wife’s father in his capacity as her attorney.
