My wife and I have decided to go our separate ways, after discussing it with our families. But her family is demanding all the money they spent on our wedding (around 10 lakhs). She has a good job and earns about 45,000 rupees a month. It feels unfair that I have to pay them back, since neither of us is at fault. What can I do about this situation?

Indian law does not generally allow for reimbursement of wedding expenses upon separation. Your wife’s family’s demand is likely based on social pressure or custom, not legal grounds. You can explain to her family that this is not a legal obligation and propose a peaceful separation agreement, focusing on fair division of shared assets.
