My wife and I are trying to get a divorce. We initially filed for a contested divorce, but now we want to settle things amicably and file for a mutual divorce instead. I heard there’s a 6-month waiting period before a mutual divorce is finalized. Is there any way to shorten this period if we both agree to proceed quickly?

Under the Hindu Marriage Act, a 6-month waiting period is mandatory after filing a mutual consent divorce petition. This period cannot be shortened, even with mutual agreement. The purpose of this waiting period is to ensure that the decision to divorce is well-considered and not impulsive.
