My sister got married a year ago. She’s been facing constant harassment from her in-laws, her mother-in-law and sister-in-law. They keep sending her back to our parents’ house, complaining that she doesn’t do enough work, and asking them to convince her to return. This has happened several times. They treat her like a servant. Her husband doesn’t offer any support either. All this has taken a toll on her health. She’s currently living with us. My parents are hesitant to send her back and want her to stay with them. Her husband is caring but doesn’t step in when they fight. What can we do?

Your sister can file a complaint under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. This law allows her to seek protection orders against her in-laws and husband, including a restraining order preventing them from harassing her. You can also help her seek counseling and support from women’s organizations.
