My husband tricked me into marriage by claiming he worked for the Indian Railways, but I later found out it was a lie. He’s been unemployed since, and I’m struggling with his constant mental and physical abuse. I have a demanding job at a multinational company, and it’s all becoming too much. I’m considering divorce, but what are my options? Can I receive compensation for the abuse I’ve endured? Is there any way to recover the money I spent on our wedding?

In India, you can file for divorce based on grounds of fraud (misrepresentation about employment) and cruelty (mental and physical abuse). You may be eligible for alimony and compensation for the abuse, but this is determined on a case-by-case basis. It is unlikely you will recover the wedding expenses unless you can prove specific financial losses directly caused by his deception.
