My husband, living in Pune with his family, filed a case against me under Section 9 of the Hindu Marriage Act. We’ve been apart for over a year, living in Dalhousie with my parents. He hasn’t tried to reconcile. He’s now filed a case in his hometown, and I’m unable to afford the travel expenses. I want a divorce and the money spent on our wedding back. What are my options?

You can file a counter-petition for divorce under Section 13 of the Hindu Marriage Act, stating that your husband has deserted you. You can also file a separate suit for restitution of conjugal rights, which would give you grounds for divorce. Additionally, you can seek legal aid to minimize the financial burden of travel expenses.
