My husband and I are going through a divorce, and we’re waiting for the 6-month cooling period to end. We filed the case in September 2016 and have a court hearing scheduled for March 2017. We’re both mature adults in our early 40s. Our lawyer wants my father to come to court as a witness and sign a statement saying he will take care of me and doesn’t object to the divorce. I’m unsure if this is really needed, as we are both consenting adults and financially independent. My father also cannot travel due to health issues. What should I do?

Under Indian law, a parent’s consent is not required for a divorce between consenting adults. Your lawyer’s request seems unnecessary, and you should discuss your concerns with them. Given your father’s health, you can explain his inability to attend and request alternative evidence of your financial independence, if necessary.
