My husband and I are going through a difficult separation. After discussing it, he became abusive and threatened to make life difficult if I didn’t leave our son with him. He even said he’d fight me in court. The next morning, he calmed down and agreed to a divorce, even offering custody of our son. I asked for this in writing, which he agreed to, but later conveniently forgot. I’m living abroad and completely dependent on him. If he does give me custody in writing, can he challenge it later? Could his family try to claim rights over our son?

While a written agreement on custody can be a strong starting point, it’s not legally binding. Your husband could still challenge it in court. His family can’t claim rights over your son unless they’ve legally adopted him. Seek legal advice to ensure your son’s best interests are protected.
