My girlfriend and I are from Jammu and Kashmir and come from different religious backgrounds. We’re planning to get married in a court ceremony, but our families aren’t supportive. Could you please guide us on the necessary legal procedures and rules for a court marriage in our state? Also, are there any special considerations for Jammu and Kashmir under the Special Marriage Act?

In Jammu and Kashmir, you can marry under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, regardless of religion. You need to file a notice of intended marriage at least 30 days prior, with both of you, two witnesses, and a marriage officer present at the ceremony. Jammu and Kashmir has its own rules for registration of marriages, which you should check with the relevant authorities.
