My friend’s daughter married a Christian boy in March 2015. They registered it under Tamil Nadu’s marriage act. They say she converted to Christianity on paper. Is this marriage legal? Should they have registered it under the Special Marriage Act? If she claims she was forced to convert, would that make the marriage invalid?

The marriage registered under the Tamil Nadu Marriage Act is legal as long as the requirements of the Act were met. The Special Marriage Act would have been a better option if they wanted to avoid religious conversion issues. If the woman claims she was forced to convert, the marriage could be challenged on grounds of coercion, potentially rendering it invalid.
