My daughter and her husband are going through a separation, and they’re facing court proceedings. The judge set a hearing date for September 6th, 2014, but the alimony hasn’t been finalized. The hearing was postponed four times because of this. I’m worried about how long the court can keep delaying the final hearing and what will happen if my son-in-law finally pays the agreed-upon amount.

Under Indian law, the court can postpone hearings for valid reasons, such as the need to gather evidence or resolve outstanding issues. However, repeated delays without justification are not permitted. If your son-in-law pays the agreed-upon alimony amount, it is likely to be considered fulfillment of his obligation, and the court may proceed with the final hearing.
