My brother has been serving a life sentence for the past 10 years. Since then, I’ve been taking care of his wife and their two children, who live with me. Lately, someone has been trying to convince my sister-in-law to ask for monthly financial support. I’m a small cable operator and have limited income. I already support my mother who is on dialysis, my wife, and the household. I simply can’t afford to give my sister-in-law any extra money. She’s threatening to file false police complaints if I don’t pay. What can I do in this situation?

You are not legally obligated to provide financial support to your sister-in-law. You have a moral obligation to your brother’s family, but it’s not enforceable. You can explain your financial situation and the support you already provide. If she continues to threaten false complaints, you can file a complaint against her for harassment and extortion.
