Married for three years, with a two-year-old son, I’m struggling to cope. My husband, from the beginning, has been more loyal to his mother than to me, putting me through difficult situations. Despite earning around ₹70,000, all his income goes towards loans, including ₹4 lakhs he took from me to clear one debt. These loans are for his family business, which consistently loses money. His family is difficult, and he has a terrible temper. I’ve lost faith in him. We’re a middle-class family, so I’m worried about the cost of divorce and whether there’s any financial support available to me. To make matters worse, his family is spreading rumors about me to my friends and relatives. I’m desperate for advice.

Under Indian law, you have grounds for divorce due to cruelty and desertion. You’re entitled to alimony and child support, and can seek legal aid if finances are a concern. Additionally, you can file a defamation case against your husband’s family for spreading rumors.
