I’m from Rajasthan and have been working in Dubai as a business consultant for the past 5 years. My husband and I got married in a temple in Mount Abu in February 2016, but we didn’t tell our families. We only have pictures of our wedding, taken outside the temple, showing me wearing sindoor and mangalsutra. Now, my husband is refusing to acknowledge our marriage. He grew up in the UAE, but is currently living in a village in Gujarat with his grandparents. His family is struggling financially in the UAE and doesn’t own any property in India. I informed my family about the marriage in 2016, and recently told his family, but they won’t accept me. I’m heartbroken and want to save our relationship. What can I do?

Since you were married in a temple in Mount Abu, Rajasthan, your marriage is likely valid under the Hindu Marriage Act. You can file a petition in a family court in Rajasthan for a declaration of your marriage and for alimony, maintenance, and other reliefs. However, since your husband denies the marriage, you will need to present evidence, such as the wedding pictures and testimony from witnesses, to prove the marriage.
