I’m a 25 year old Hindu woman, married for just two months. My marriage was forced upon me, and I’ve left my husband to be with my boyfriend. I left a note for him. If he files a police complaint, what will happen? If I tell the police I came with my boyfriend of my own free will, will they take action against him? I don’t want to go back to my husband, I want to stay with my boyfriend. Divorce can only be filed after a year. What should I do? I’m also considering filing a case against my family for forcing me into marriage. Please guide me, I need clear advice.

If your husband files a police complaint, the police may investigate the case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Your statement about willingly leaving with your boyfriend will be considered. However, depending on the circumstances, the police might still advise you to return to your husband for the time being. You can seek legal advice from a lawyer about your rights and options, including filing a case against your family for forced marriage, and explore legal avenues for separation or divorce.
