I’m 36 years old, an MBBS doctor who finished medical school 9 years ago but haven’t pursued any specialization yet. I’m going through a divorce from my wife, a successful dermatologist. She’s demanding ₹4 lakhs monthly as alimony, which I can’t manage. The case has been in court for 3 years now, and she’s also filed a dowry harassment case against me. My lawyer suggested filing a case of abuse against her, but I’m feeling stuck. I really want this to end soon. Is there any way to get a divorce despite her asking for such a high alimony? My lawyer seems pessimistic, but I’m hoping for some solutions. We’re a Hindu couple, if that helps.

Under Indian law, a court can consider your financial capacity and her earning potential when determining alimony. The high alimony demand can be contested, and the dowry harassment case can be addressed through evidence and legal arguments. However, filing a case of abuse against your wife might escalate the situation and not be conducive to a quick resolution. Consult your lawyer about seeking a mutually agreeable settlement, which might involve compromise on both sides.
