I got married in April 2014. Since then, my mother-in-law, brother-in-law, and husband have been subjecting me to constant abuse – physical and emotional. They’ve denied me proper meals, forced me to work, and pressured me for dowry. Even after I became pregnant, the abuse continued. I gave birth to a daughter in May 2022, but my in-laws and husband weren’t happy. They haven’t visited me in 8 months. My husband has now sent me a notice demanding I return. What legal options do I have to ensure my safety and protect my child?

You have the legal right to seek protection from domestic violence and dowry harassment under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, and the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. You can file a complaint with the police or a magistrate, seeking a restraining order against your husband and in-laws to ensure your safety and that of your child.
