After getting married in August 2013, I soon became pregnant. But what followed was a constant barrage of emotional abuse and humiliation from my husband and mother-in-law about my social standing, finances, and work. My husband even went so far as to monitor my phone, take my debit card, and force me to quit my job. After enduring this for six months, I returned to my parents’ home. Now, with our child almost 2.5 years old, he wants me and our child to come back. He shows no remorse for his actions, blaming everything on me and insisting I should obey his commands.

Based on your account, your husband’s actions constitute domestic violence, including emotional abuse, financial control, and coercion. You have grounds to file for divorce and seek custody of your child. You can also file a complaint with the police under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.
